Any move can be a stressful experience, but an international move can involve some hidden stressors that you may not be aware of, so it is vital to plan early and be informed.
Certain countries within the region have some very strict customs regulations which you need to be aware of. Australian customs regulations are among the strictest in the world which your International Move Consultant should brief you on. These include the necessity to thoroughly clean dirt off all shoes, sports equipment and items of outdoor furniture; to thoroughly clean the dust bags in vacuum cleaners (and also the nozzles), and to make sure the refrigerator is free of any organic materials. Any items found that don’t meet the inspection standards, will either be disposed of (at an additional charge to you) or treated (also at an additional charge to you).
Door to door, a move to Australia will take approximately 5 weeks, including the AQIS inspection. Clearance through AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services) will take 2 weeks once your goods have arrived. All items will be thoroughly inspected, and this additional handling makes insurance imperative. In the event that a claim needs to be made, it is important to choose a moving company that has a physical presence in both the country of dispatch and the country of arrival respectively.
Similarly, New Zealand has strict restrictions on what you can and can’t bring into the country, although you goods are not likely to be quarantined.
Certain provinces in China have differing import taxes on certain items, so your Move Consultant should give you indicative charges for these items. For moves into China, it is strongly encouraged that a resident permit and/or work permit is finalized and on-hand before the shipment leaves Singapore to avoid any delays at the other end. A resident permit/work permit should also be arranged before dispatch for moves into Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
If you plan to have your move completed by the Christmas period, you must start planning early. You should aim to have containers arrive at the destination by the first week of December to allow for customs clearance before the holiday period. This is particularly the case for moves into Australia and New Zealand. This is one of the busiest times of the year for moving companies and resources may be limited due to the demand.
